We've said it here many times before, vintage watches — and gently used newer, collectible watches — hold their value and even gain in value. The auctions are evidence of that. In fact, this fall, we will see top lots coming from Christie's, Sotheby's, Antiquorum and Phillips Auction houses, as well as from a few smaller auctioneers.
Antiquorum Auctioneers has just announced its October sale of “Important Modern & Vintage Timepieces” to be held on October 8th at The Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. There will be 324 outstanding timepieces up for bid, including an impressive selection of A. Lange & Sohne, Breguet, Patek Philippe, Omega and Rolex watches, among others.
Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo has also announced its November sale: FOUR. This auction is expected to break all records — as several truly unusual finds will be sold, including a rare stainless steel Patek Philippe Reference 1518 that has never been on the block before. Additionally, there is a fine prototype Omega Alaska II watch being auctioned. There is a host of great Rolex watches up for sale in this action, as well.
Expected to garner between half a million and 1 million CHF, the Rolex Ref. 6085 “The Dragon” watch is a hand-painted piece made in 1951. The 18-karat gold watch features a hand-painted cloisonné dial depicting a colorful dragon. Just five of these watches are known to exist. This 6085 is the most unique.
Expected to fetch between 300,000 to 600,000 CHF is a rare Rolex “The Perfect Rose” watch, Reference 3330. It's a 37mm pre-Oyster Rolex chronograph created in the 1940s and made of rose gold with an original rose-colored dial. There is also a host of other Submariners and Oysters up for sale as rare editions.
